SADC and Informal Border Trade

This is the outline of a research entitled: “The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Informal Cross Border Trade: A facilitating or stifling trade environment?” The research seeks to address a set of interrelated objective, including:

1.    Exploring the circumstances surrounding the emergence of informal cross border trade.

2.    Evaluating the trade environment within SADC and examine what policies impede cross border trade and how they can be changed.

3.    Filling the gap in the existing literature on cross border trade by re-conceptualizing meaning of informal cross border trader and informal traders; and to show how informal cross border trade plays a crucial role in regional integration and poverty alleviation by documenting the experiences of Zimbabwean traders.
