The Governance Dimensions of Food Security in Malawi

E-mail Print

USAID’s Bureau of Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, Office of Democracy and Governance (DCHA/DG) and the Office of Food for Peace (DCHA/FFP) together produced a report on “the underlying governance causes of food security problems.” The paper explains that there are concerns about Malawi’s state and market solutions to food availability and access. It also addresses how food security has become a very sensitive policy issue and how “government capacity for food and nutrition policy implementation is thin.” Furthermore, the paper discusses how Malawi, as an aid-dependant country, is more likely to shape its policies according to foreign or external influence. All these findings are concerning and this report explains the contentious issues well.
