After a meeting at Lambeth Palace in July 1998 with representatives from the OECD countries, the Bishop released a statement which expressed his disapproval of the debt crisis. He said that the ‘debt burden is intolerable’ and would not do his religion justice by keeping silent on the matter. He called for the political leaders to follow on their word and write off the debts.
