Ending the stranglehold of global debt on impoverished nations

E-mail Print

This resolution was adopted by the XXII General Synod of the United Church of Christ after its meeting in Rhodes Island in 1999. The resolution encourages its associations, members and congregation to be supportive and involved in Jubilee 2000. The resolution explains how the poorest nations in the world have suffered the most due to debt repayments. The resolution criticizes how the World Bank and IMF push for debt repayment and not cancellation. As a result, the Church of Christ calls for a cancellation of debt and supported Jubilee 2000 to make this goal achievable.
