Catholic social teaching on international debt

E-mail Print

Most of the Catholic social teaching on international debt is from the Latin American debt experience of the 1980s. It is not shocking to note that the Vatican made its first major debt statement during this time period. The US Catholic Bishops followed suit, but only made their major statement on third world debt after a conference in 1989. This paper explains the Catholic social teaching on debt and also explains the biblical imagery on how to resolve the international debt crisis.
